I met Julia in 1984 when I went down to Moruga to work as the District health visitor in that area. Julia was the library assistant in the library right next door to the health center. From that moment, after we met, we became friends and there are really two things in Julia’s life that I would like to highlight. One is her involvement in the community based rehabilitation program that was implemented in Moruga. I can remember asking Julia to join the group and she did. We then wanted someone to do the advocacy part of the program but it meant you had to go for training. It required her to go to Jamaica for 3 weeks to be trained in this advocacy program. And Julia looked at me and said, nurse I can’t go you know, because I don’t have a passport. My passport has expired and long time I haven’t travelled to go anywhere and I don’t have a passport so I wont be able to go. I said to her Julia we really need you on this program to do this work, and without any further hesitation, the next thing I knew is that Julia went to get her passport and organized herself and her children, and she was able to leave and go and do this program. When she came back, she still continued to train other members of the community to advocate on behalf of persons with disabilities in the Moruga area. So I think in terms of giving service, it is one of the parts of Julia’s life, that in spite of all her commitments and looking after her children, Julia was able to commit and fulfill that role as an advocate on behalf of those persons in the Moruga district. The other thing I want to mention is that Julia has really been involved in the church. Julia has been very spiritual and I could remember Julia saying to me that when she is abroad and she is not able to do her activities in the church, she feels dry. That is how she described it. And I understood when I saw Julia. I had asked her to come and bless a house for me in Gasparillo and Julia came and she told me, before she started, that she wanted me to learn how to do it, because it is something that is easy and anybody could do that. I was really in awe to see how Julia conduct herself. Although the house did not have anybody in it at that moment, Julia went around to each room and she prayed and she used anointing oil and she used the Holy water and she prayed in every room that she went into. Julia did downstairs and then we went upstairs and she did upstairs following the same procedure, and she came to the front porch, and when I looked at Julia’s face, there was an aura that I had never seen on her before and I then understood what her words meant when she said she feels dry when she is not able to fulfill this role in terms of her fellowship and her act of duty in terms of praying and blessing the house and so on. So those are the two things I want to highlight about Julia. So so many miles separate us, but my prayers and thoughts are with the entire family. May God strengthen you at this time.
